We get your company’s EIN from the IRS
An EIN is your company’s federal tax ID number. You need it to open a business bank account, hire people and file taxes.
Why do I need to get an EIN?
A business bank account
Federal rules require a tax number to open an account for a company. Banks often ask for the operating agreement too.
Taking card payments
Payment companies such as Stripe ask for the EIN to set up a U.S. business account.
Hiring people
Payroll taxes and the forms your employees get at year end are filed under the EIN.
File taxes
Federal tax filings (and state tax filings, if applicable to your company) will require you to have an EIN. Always check your tax obligations with your accountant.
Can I get an EIN online?
Only if the owner has a Social Security number or an ITIN and the company is based in the U.S.

Common questions about getting an EIN
Is an EIN the same as a Florida tax number?
No. The EIN is federal. If your company sells taxable goods or services, it also registers with the Florida Department of Revenue.
What if I lose my EIN letter?
The IRS can send a replacement letter, but it can take about a month. We keep a copy of your EIN letter in your business records.
